The Enemy Within Prologue: Dumplings and Sausages (Session 2)

Session 2:  Dumplings and Sausages

On the 23rd of January 2026 I ran the second session of my home Enemy Within Campaign.

 Noon, 1st of Nachexen, 2512

The Vagabonds are granted access to Herr Fleischer's links park address by, Karl Diener, Herr Fleischer's supercilious gentleman's gentleman, and they are led through to the kitchen, where a veritable feast is being layed on my 'Dumpling'* Herr Fleischer's halfling cook.

The Vagabonds tuck into sausages, and other meaty treats, as the halfling lets slip a number of clues, including the existance of Hans, the paramour of Herr Fleischer's daughter.

After the Vagabonds have had about as much as they can take of Dumpling constant nattering, Georg Fleischer arrives and takes a seat, tucking in to the feast.

He explains that his daughter has been missing for three nights, and that he is prepared to pay them 5 Karls each for their efforts in finding her, and a bonus if she is returned to him. During the discussion they learn that she did not return home after a night out with her friend Carla Lindt, though Georg seems to know little more than the name. They also learn that she will sometimes visit the various butcher's shops that make up Georg's little empire of meat.

By the end of the meeting they seem pretty convinced that Georg is probably to busy with work to have noticed Hanna running of with her paramour Hans. They are also in possession of one certain fact Herr Fleischer "...ain't a rich man."

Hoping for a little more to go on, they question Diener. Who has been getting increasingly more irritated with the Vagabonds, writes down Carla's address, sending them packing. He is so angry with them(for amongst other things half inching a lot of Tilean smoked sausage under their coats) they his facade collapsed revealing him to be every bit as common as they are;  and so they set off to confirm their suspicion that Hans is missing too.

Of course, nothing so simple is afoot, and the Vagabonds discover that Hans is at work at the glass works where he is an apprentice. He hasn't seen Hanna in days, and is also worried about her.

So, bemused, they set off to find Carla.

However, it takes only a few minutes for them to remember they cannot read, and so back to the reiks platz they head, where once again they meet up with Rosa Liebknecht once more, paying her a few pennies to read them the directions.

After recieving the directions, they witness a street preacher who is busy harranging the crowd for their sins. One woman in particular seems to have a particularly guilt concience and runs off, but before the Vagabonds can even consider going to see what is wrong....

‘I see Darkness Gathering as the Last House of Joy Falls
- beware, for Shadows Over Bögenhafen stir!
Then Beloved Morr, resplendent in Vestments of Green,
 stands astride Sigmar’s Great River.
Yea, I see Death on the Reik and I despair!
For then the Stained Hand guides the Once Mighty Lord,
and this Power Behind the Throne curses us all.
Lo, the Horned Rat then claims the Broken King atop his Throne of Lies,
and the White Walls Fall, leaving our Empire in Ruins!
Tremble in fear, ye mighty, for the End Times have come.’

Prophesy rings out across the Reiks Platz, the preacher struck down in a faint in the aftermath.
The Vagabonds, seeing this as street theatre, make their way on to Carla Lindt's house.

They find Carla is a fashionable young middle class woman, and upon learning that they are looking into the disappearance of Hanna, she opens up. The vagabonds learn that Carla and Hanna has attended the Gunner's Arms, a favourite haunt of both girls, Hans, and a number of the fashionable young men (Wolfgang, Leopold, and Rudi) who considered themselves suiters to Carla. However, Carla lost track of Hanna during the Cabaret.

After their visit to Carla, the Vagabonds make their way onto the first of Herr Fleischer's shops, there to ask questions of Uter, one of Herr Fleischer's managers. He isn't especially helpful, but points the vagabonds in the direction of the next of the shops...

The Vagabonds earned 50xp and we nailed down their short term ambition. The PCs mostly interacted with Sing for your Supper, however, I added elements of the scene "Manic Street Preacher" from the Enemy in Shadows.

* One of many little nods to Andy Law and Lawhammer to come.
