The Enemy Within Prologue: Greaves and Wurststaats (Session 4)
Session 4: Greaves and Wurststaats...
On the 6th of Febuary 2026 I ran the Fourth session of my home Enemy Within Campaign.
Evening, 1st of Nachexen, 2512
The Vagabond split up heading to three separate pubs to chase down leads.
First is Connie. She sets off to the Gunners arms in hope of chasing down Wolfgang, Leopold, and Rudi. However, she struggles to find her way though the city streets, taking an hour to find the place. When she finally does turn up at the pub, she finds it already heaving with men and women up for a night on the down. However, she finds her background as a petty thief has not equipped her well to understand the basics niceties of a social space made for and by people who have served in the state army. Worse still, she has assumed, based on learning about the gunnery schools passing out celebration purchases, that it is being held here. So while trying to talk to the barman to get further information, she managed to upset the man. Not so much he kicks her out, but enough that he makes her wait.
Meanwhile Erik Kleinsen makes his way to the Green Bottle Inn, in search of Albrechte. Unfortunately for him, his navigation skills are just as bad as Connies, and he also take an hour to get there.
When he finally arrive things are complicated further by the discovery that a large crowd of ruffians and beggars have gathered outside the pub, each grasping a puppy, full grown puppy, or in one case, a particularly ugly cat, chanting the name of one "Herr Zimmerman".
With a little asking around, Erik discovers that the crowd believes that they have found Herr Zimmerman's aunt's lost pedigree puppy, and that they are here to claim a reward. Of course, all the other members of the mob are wrong or crazy.
To make matters worse, shortly after Erik's arrival, Rosa Liebknecht turns up (having followed her people, so that she can lead them), sets up her soap box, and begins to wind up the crowd.
Elsewhere, Diethart Drechsler makes his way back to the Reaver's Return. He drops off the groups ill gotten sausaged, and spends some time arranging for the re-shoeing, proper grooming, and stabling of his horse, Sir Reginald Hargreeves. While he does so, he gets into a discussion about his past fighting with the Sabres of Glory. Once done with this he heads for Chez Louis, and his hot date with a married curtain twitcher.

Back at the Gunners arms, Connie manages to wave down a waitress, Greta and ask her some questions. It becomes clear quickly that Greta is partly deaf, but Connie doesn't pick up on the fact that the party saw Greta in the Reiks Platz earlier in the day. Greta is able to point Connie at Wolfgang and Leopold, who are drinking at a side table. They recall the night of Hanna's disappearance, and talk about the fact that there had been good music that night, and they lost track of the young woman during a performance.
Connie also learns about a series of strange events relating to Wolfgang and Leopold's' friend, Rudi Wurststaats, who also seems to have disappeared after turning up with a bunch of sausages. He'd gifted a link of these to the lads, but before they could enjoy them, Rudi's valet had turned up, barged into their lodging, and take the sausages (and they suspected some coin) before leaving. Neither have seen Rudi, or his valet, Johann Greave, since. The pair agree to take Connie to Rudi's apartment.
Back at the Green Bootle, Erik Kleinsen edges around the ridiculous crowd, and looks inside, seeing the panicky landord and his staff baracading the place, and Albrechte, deep in the saurce. Erik Kleinsen makes his way back to Fräulein Liebknecht, and has a quiet word, telling her that Herr Zimmerman's run off to the Gunner's arms, and the intent on revolution, the very righton student from PLANT* addresses the group, and leads them off in the direction of the gunner's arms, leaving Erik free to go inside and chat with Albrechte.
This discussion is long and weaving, taking in how he lost his leg, Hanna's childhood, and other informational cul-de-sacs; but eventually the old lush spills the beans on a series of odd break ins at his shop. Break ins, in which almost nothing seems to be stolen, but the work space is left a mess.
Erik decides he has broken the case, persuades Albrechte to give her the key on the pretext of fetching his leg.
Diethart finally arrives at Chez Louis and the questionable company of Frau Garten. Diethart, being unable to read, misses the many posters for performances by the Tilean songbird herself, Maria della Miragliano, and they sit down for a meal of bretonnian fine dining.
Shortly after arrival, it becomes increasingly clear that the promise of further information was all a rouse for Frau Garten to get a good meal, Diethart's company, or both. However, he is saved from her predations when Louis, the owner, turns up, and joins them. He pours himself a large glass of the kislevite brandy that Frau Garten has ordered, and chats with them.
During this chat, Diethart learns for several recent thefts tied to the business, and that the thefts took place during the performance of Maria della Miragliano.

When the meal gets done, Frau Garten tries to get Diethart to pay for the meal, and he forcefully pays for less than half, leaving the Frau to storm off...something that will definately not have consequences later! And then Diethart chats a little more with Louis, who promises to pay Diethart, if he can solve the theft problem.
Somewhere near the Gunner's arms, the Wolfgang, Leopold and Connie stumble up to Rudi's appartment door a little worse for ware, and with the lads pretty clearly having the wrong idea. However, when the door opens to reveal a throughly ransacked room, that smells of fever, the lads sobber up quickly.
And across town, Erik unlocks the door to the shed at Albrechte's shop to be confronted with the sight of a human leg by the meat waste bin, and Hanna's gold locket hanging above the meat grinder, where someone has clearly been making sausages...

A very social heavy and slightly disjointed session last night. Connie and Erik earned 100xp, and Diethart achieved his short term aim of getting Reggi stabled, groomed and re-shod for a further 50xp, and also got a bit of his backstory out for another 50xp.
I had a lot of fun, there is a reason that Sing for your supper is one of my favourite adventures for WFRP, in that it is beautifully structured and has some great moment, but also fairly open to re-imagining on the fly.
* we lost a solid 5 minutes to Life of Brian, The People's Front of Judea, jokes and quotes. I must stress, we are not normally a Monte Python Quote style group, so this was actually a fun change.
